Research about reasoning are one of basic ways to understand how humans acquire and create knowledge. Creative way people are analyzing given data using their knowledge and beliefs, its quickness and efficiency are role model for computers and machines. Psychological theory is the basis for applicable solutions for machine learning within cognitive sciences.

The goal of the project is to decide the sequence of formal and material analysis of premises. Material analysis is used to confront premises and findings with knowledge possessed. Formal analysis is used to decide whether the logic form used is valid. Actual reasoning theories (rules theory, mental models theory, dual-processing theory) differ very much when dealing with this matter.
Rules theory implies that knowledge can be only used to evaluate the findings of internal, rule-based process of reasoning. Ratiocinative one is sure, whether his findings are valid, so the ones not meeting the material analysis criteria’s are not accepted.

Mental models theory implies creation of mental representations for each problem situation. Conclusions are drawn directly from the model, without use of any formal process. Conclusions are evaluated by searching for counter-examples. If none found, the findings are taken as valid. Otherwise, when there is at least one counter example, mental model is extended by additional models, that were implicite available (Johnson-Laird calls it fleshing-out). Considering all models the next conclusion is drawn, than evaluated etc. This outlasts till non counterexample is found or non implicit model is externalized. Reasoner is not sure, whether his conclusion is valid, but knows only he found non counterexamples.
Dual-processing theory describes two systems: heuristic-associative and the other, formal-analytic one. Those are two separate, evolutionary different, processes. The heuristic system (S1) is quicker, than the S2. The conclusion by using S1 can be earlier drawn, with use of knowledge and beliefs. It’s more probable, that this conclusion is evaluated by slower S2 according its logic legality, than other way around.

In planned experiments the time of drawing a conclusion will be measured. The tasks will be presented in sorting paradigm as well as in Wasons selection task paradigm. Part of tasks will be burden with the material error – it means the premises will not be consistent with knowledge. Those task (according to rule and mental models theories) should be analyzed longer. But dual-process theory claims this situation, as easier and quicker for human, as drawn by quicker S1.

All tasks will be presented also in version, that not allows use of subject’s knowledge (answer, using only the information’s from premises). This manipulation should shorten the time of reaction according to dual-process (S2 has to be used, S1 conclusion must been sorted-out) and lingered according to other theories (material analysis of findings is not needed anymore).

In result of planed research the evaluation of most popular reasoning theories will be possible. The proposed ways of using knowledge in material analysis, its sequence and eventual interactions with formal analysis will be considered as important touchstones. The unused enough method of evaluation of those theories can impulse other researchers to their work and inspire discussions about use of knowledge in reasoning.

Ich möchte Pilot werden, weil ich Höhenlage mag . Der Beruf von Pilot hat mich immer fasziniert. Man kann in diesem Job viele schöne Aussichten bewundern. Es kann auch viel Adrenalin sichern. Obwohl es manchmal gefährlich ist, ist das mein Traumberuf.

Ich möchte Polizist werden. Ich habe immer darüber geträumt. Dieser Beruf gefäIlt mir weil ich mich für die Waffe interessiere und ich möchte anderen Leuten helfen. Der Nachteil diese Berufs ist, dass es gefährlich sein kann. Allerdings will ich nach dem Abitur die Polizeischule besuchen.

It should be: Ich möchte EIN Pilot werden. The same in the sentence: Ich möchte EIN Polizist werden.

Es kann auch viel Adrenalin sichern.

Es kann or Man kann? I'd prefer the second. Sichern? Maybe nehmen?

I'm not German either, but here you have some other mistakes corrected:

1. I'd say "Ich will Polizist werden", without "ein". Why? Well, it's not English.

2. I'd say: "Man kann BEI diesem Job....

3. As for adrenaline, I'd say "Das ist wie ein Adrenalinschub"


Ich habe immer daVON geträumt. Der Beruf gefällt mir, weil ich mich für Waffen interessiere und ich will anderen MENSCHEN helfen. Der/Ein Nachteil dieseS Berufs ist, dass er gefährlich ist.

All these prepositions and declinations in German are so stupid. I was told that even Germans are making mistakes in it and that they don' t speak using the grammar as we know it but they do it in a more random way. For example they don' t mind creating sentences like "Habe ich gemacht", "Bin ich ins Kino" and so on. All you need is to communicate, but the teachers make us learn everything but that what shall help us survive in Germany :P
