I'm pleased to welcome everyone to an exciting new season :D In fact, it's going to be a silly season when it we mean events

But for me it is an extremely busy season. The quality of players in the National Team is declining. There are significant deficiencies in several positions, a short reserve bench and poor prospects for next season. So intensive search, observation, training, etc. on my part continues. Many thanks to all involved in training, to those who do not have time to train for inesting in academies and releasing new juniors. (i mean skills)
Please very much, do not throw out 17-year-olds right away - it may turn out that a player who theoretically will be nothing can become an important figure at the age of 20-21 Sokker's reforms mean that the quality of new players will go down so I guess you have to lower expectations a bit.

And now the U21 schedule for the 68 season:

SCOTLAND U21 - EL SALVADOR U21 5:0 (w.o.)

< Too much whisky? >
The guests came to Scotland and probably drank too much whiskey the day before. On the day of the match, the guests failed to field 11 players. Only 9 players came out on the field which resulted in a walkover.

SCOTLAND U21 - CRNA GORA U21 0:0

< Dissatisfaction >
The match against Montenegro was an interesting test, the currently strongest lineup was tested. I tested 2 new tactics, which were adjusted more to the personalities.

The match itself was completely dominated by our team. 12 vs 2 shots, 58% ball possession and 61% of the game in the opponent's half. The tactics worked well, we created plenty of situations. Unfortunately, our best striker (H. MacLeister) did not have his day. Very unfortunate because there should have been several goals in this match. And so we have a draw and a huge dissatisfaction

SCOTLAND U21 - SWEDEN U21 0:1
( Haglund 5' )

< Shooting impotence >
The beginning of the match with Sweden was really interesting. Already in the second minute a red card was seen by the opponent's player Rundquist. It would seem that I should be happy about this because, after all, we will be playing on the power. Nothing could be further from the truth, I felt some anxiety because a red card at the very beginning of a match usually heralds the unpredictability of the engine.
I didn't wait long to find out that my bad feeling was right. In the 5th minute, Sweden scored a goal playing in 10. However, it must be admitted that the goal falls after a great action. Fröberg intercepts the ball and plays a perfect perpendicular to Haglund. The ball passes the defense line and we have a 1vs1 situation and the guest striker does not waste the situation.
Of course, in the rest of the match we create a lot of situations for ourselves, but none of the strikers can take advantage of them. Once again MacLeister fails, who with such skills should score more goals.
Unfortunately, the defeat in this match makes me change my plans for this season. Since we can't win winnable matches we will test the lineup for the Druid's Cup and next season. Therefore, in each of the next matches we will play a maximum of 4 players aged 21 (these are the rules in Druid's Cup)

SCOTLAND U21 - SENEGAL U21 0:0

< Big challenge >

The plan for this match was as follows. We play the first half with a lineup that will be able to play in the Druid's Cup. So 4 players aged 21 appeared - DEF Moray MacBeth, MIDs Alister MacRaith and Ewan Milligan and ATT Hugh MacLeister. The game looks pretty good (however, a few mistakes I noticed),in the 34th minute we have a penalty kick, which, however, was not used by..... MacLeister :/
The screen of my laptop somehow survived it, fortunately.

The second half already looked much worse, because after our 21-year-olds went down we gave the initiative to the opponent. I found out how difficult the matches ahead of us are, how big deficiencies we have in many positions (actually, 2 players are suitable for MID - who are not able to reach the level of Milligan or MacRaith anyway.
Senegal dominated the 2nd half however managed to keep a clean slate. Offensively it was already weak - we will have to figure out other solutions.

In this match they made their debut:
Dean Cooper, age: 19
Mitchell Watt, age: 19
Jackie MacSweeney, age: 19
Christopher McGhee, age: 20
Kris McGinty, age: 18

Today's match against Nicaragua. As announced we continue to test. The first half will play a squad that can play for U21 ==> max 4 x 21 years old. In the second half the 21 year olds will be replaced by younger players. I already have to combine how to put it all together next season. We will test 1 new tactic, and the other tactic is after small adjustments to fit the players who will perform.

If anyone feels like it, you are welcome. We start at 12:59

SCOTLAND U21 - NICARAGUA U21 4:0
( MacLeister 6', Dempsie 11', 15', 30' )

Our players attacked the opponent from the beginning. After a composed action, as early as in the 2nd minute a dangerous shot is taken by Dempsie. In the 6th minute a great action is carried out by Milligan and passes to MacLeister, who scores the first goal. The next goal is the result of another composed action by Milligan, MacLeister and Dempsie, who finishes the action. Our advantage outlines more and more. 16 minute and an unused situation by MacLeister, but Milligan takes over the ball and passes to Dempsie, who scores another goal. 31 first minute and an individual action is finished by Dempsie. In the 37th minute, Milligan makes a rally but catches an injury on his centering - in fact, the match ends at this point. The main driving force has left the field.
Later there are attempts at various actions but no goal is scored. In the second half, four 21-year-old players are replaced by younger colleagues. The quality of the game drops drastically, we lose fluidity, there are visible things to refine tactics. A good test.

Debutants:
Todd MacWhirter 19 yo - MID
Eoin Hislop 19 yo - ATT
Finlay Thompson 18 yo - GK

PANAMA U21 - SCOTLAND U21 1:1
( Pinilla 16' - McGhee 55' )

This match was interesting in that Panama entered it with their strongest first lineup. As it turned out, they achieved record scores that were slightly higher than ours.
The match itself quite evenly matched. The beginning was full of fouls and lack of situations. Later Milligan jerked a few times and we began to gain the upper hand. A good situation in the 15th minute had MacLeister but he did not take advantage of it. Instead, the Panamanians' retaliatory action brought a goal. In the 16th minute, in confusion in our penalty area, MacDuff loses the ball and the hosts' striker packs it into the goal. Moments later, MacMonies plays very well and Dempsie fails to take advantage of 2 situations in one action. Later, Milligan takes the burden of the game. Scotland attacks and in the 28th minute a great situation is wasted by MacLeister. This situation could have taken revenge already in the 32nd minute because the opponent's striker, for reasons known only to himself, kicks the ball high over our goal ( from 5 meters).
At the beginning of the second half youngsters enter - defender Watt and striker McGhee, in the 61st minute MacWhirter and McBride arrive. Strongly this weakens our strength but we manage to equalize and until the end of the match the result does not change.
After this match our best striker MacLeister begins to lose confidence in my eyes. A lot of losses and unused situations mean that the next adjustments in tactics will not put on him.
The match against Panama turned out to be a very valuable sparring match

HONDURAS U21 - SCOTLAND U21 2:4
( Naira 6' 49' - MacLeister 4', Dempsie 12', 33', 39' )

The match against Honduras was a typical test before the Druid's Cup. So they were able to field four players aged 21. I decided to field an entire defensive unit of u20 players and the four at age 21 were Milligan, MacRaith and forwards Dempsie and MacLeister. After the break they were changed by more u20 players, respectively: MacOwen, MacWhirter, McGhee and Hislop.
The match starts with our attacks, we finally played 3 strikers. In the 5th minute, MacLeister takes his opportunity ( surprisingly). However, we quickly lose a goal, which falls after a shot from more than 20 meters! After that it was our advantage. Especially the second tactic created a lot of situations for us. These, however, were not used by MacLeister and also Dempsie, who scored a hattrick, could have made more goals.
We started the second half by losing a goal. Our goalkeeper MacMutrie was still in the locker room with his thoughts because he let pass an opponent's centering pass, which bounced off the crossbar and found its way to the feet of a Honduran striker. It can be said that 2 goals were gifted to the opponents by our goalkeeper.
The second half, especially after the removal of our stars looked a little worse. We didn't have a player in midfield who could deliver balls to ATT. This showed what kind of problems we might have next season and this match made me look for more tactical solutions. Honduras created 2 more threatening situations, fortunately they did not beat our goalkeeper.

Druid's Cup U20/21

Rules (most important):
- we can only use 4 players who are 21 years old
- higher ranked opponents can use accordingly:
*team from the first basket: only players u 20.
*the team from the second basket: max 2 players aged 21.
* team from the 3rd basket: max 4 players aged 21 (that's us!).
* team from the 4th basket: no limit on players aged 21.

Group B:
1. Australia U21
2. Scotland U21
3. Schweiz U21
4. Česká republika U21

We ended up in Group B.

We came to face such teams as:
Česká Republika U21 - a World Cup participant, a team with much more potential than Scotland. As it later turned out - the bronze medal winner at the World Cup. A much higher ranked opponent.

Schweiz U21 - another World Cup participant. Also potential much greater than ours. We played 2 matches with them in the qualification for the World Cup. 2 times we lost. A much higher ranked opponent.

Australia U21 - the winner of this year's Asian Cup U21. They are ranked around 35th in the NTu21 standings. Also the favorite in the clash with us.

SAKARTVELO U21 - SCOTLAND U21 0:5
( MacLeister 3', Dempsie 18', 20', McGhee 46', McBride 83' )

In the first round we were supposed to face the Czech Republic. They, however, are still playing at the World Cup so we win the first group match in the Druid's Cup by walkover.
Instead of the match with the Czech Republic we arrange a sparring match with Georgia - there was not much choice left.
I decided to check the adjustments in tactics so we came out in the first half with the lineup as for the Druid's Cup. In the second half, the 21-year-olds were traditionally replaced by younger players. The match was won easily. Without any major problems. Again, one of the tactics needed adjustment, especially the play of the midfielders. In the second half, our young strikers had a lot of situations, some situations were created. A good prognosis. The fact that we somehow looked good against Georgia is not an authoritative indicator. However, I keep in mind that the skills of our youth will grow o certain solutions may come in handy for next season.

SCOTLAND U21 - SCHWEIZ U21 1:0
( MacLeister 14' )

The first match for something this season. The opponent is Switzerland, which is much higher in the ranking than we are. Already the composition of the lineup caused many problems. Should we insert much better DEFs at the age of u21? If so, how many? It is known that u21 players can only play 4. I decided that one better DEF would be useful, since the Swiss have a good attacking force. I could not afford to give up our best players, midfielders Milligan and MacRaith. The attack had to feature Dempsie or MacLeister - just which one? Not bad playing and scoring goals Dempsie, or skill-wise the best MacLeister? The form decided and the latter came out, who takes advantage of the credit (heavily abused in previous matches) and scores the winning goal.
The match itself is very evenly matched. We are finally playing against the strongest opponent of the season. In this match J. MacSweeney, who impressed me a lot, showed a good side. I think he can be an important point of our team in future seasons.
We recorded a very valuable victory - and it's even more gratifying that it wasn't some kind of gift from the sokker engine :D

How come we were in 3rd basket if we are the 4th ranked team?
Sounds like a basket case decided that...
2024-02-16 16:31:05
Good question, wasn't well explained.

The baskets were determined based on ranking points, which means each basket had a different number of teams in it.

So it wasn't baskets as in the top 25% in basket 1, next 25% in 2 etc, it was just to try and make it so "weaker" teams had a slight advantage on players they could select over "stronger" teams

Druid's Cup U20/21

SCOTLAND U21 - AUSTRALIA U21 0:2
( Prince 88', Bourne 90')

Huge disappointment after this match. It seemed that such a number of situations must bring goals. Nothing like that happened, and the bad feeling came as early as the 5th minute. Milligan does not score a penalty and I knew that the match would not end well.
I would play the next match in the same way. From the beginning I reckoned with the possibility of losing a goal - I let go of covering the wingers in favor of increasing the offensive power. The result was more ball possession, more play in the opponent's half and an advantage in the situations created (13-5). And so what...?
The 14th minute and a great situation for MacLeister - unused. Australia has an almost identical situation in the 27th minute - it was threatening....
Later we create a lot of situations and control the match. In addition, from the 60th minute we play on the power play because one of the Australians gets a red.
Very big advantage on our side but lack of effectiveness. 88th minute and a corner kick for Australia ends with a goal.
In the 89th minute the ball is taken away from the winger by Wilkinson. I don't know what came up in his mind, but he decides to leave his opponent alone and moves to attack himself. His clumsy offensive action and leaving the Australian winger ends with the opponent having a highway to our goal after the loss, a centering and 0:2.
To this day, I do not know what happened in this match. It must be admitted that the opponent scored elaborate goals - not some accidental ones
