A second person appears to have been cured of HIV thanks to a normal, if radical, treatment for leukaemia. The patient, who had Hodgkin’s lymphoma, underwent a stem-cell transplant in 2016 to treat the cancer. The cell donor chosen had inherited a mutation that, in healthy people, prevents HIV infection in the first place. After 16 months doctors withdrew the patient’s HIV-controlling drugs, and 18 months since then, there has been no resurgence of the virus
