Galatasaray come calling for Neill
Australian defender Lucas Neill has cut short his Everton career after less than four months at Goodison Park, joining fellow UEFA Europa League contenders Galatasaray AŞ on a one-and-a-half year deal.
Free transfer
Neill, whose West Ham United FC contract expired at the end of last season, moved to Everton on a free transfer in September and has since featured 15 times under David Moyes. The 31-year-old, who has not played outside of England throughout his career, was due to remain on Merseyside for the remainder of the campaign but has instead opted to join Galatasaray, though not until after Everton's Premier League fixture against Manchester City FC on Saturday.
'Surprise'
"The move has come as a surprise to me," Neill said. "I'd like to thank the staff and fans but most of all my team-mates for making my time at Everton very enjoyable. I am pleased to have had a positive impact on the team and the club and wish them every success for the future." Galatasaray sit second in the Turkish Süper Lig and will face Club Atlético de Madrid in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 on 18 and 23 February. Everton take on Sporting Clube de Portugal on 16 and 25 February.
Jô fills in for Baroš at Galatasaray
Galatasaray AŞ have secured cover for injured striker Milan Baroš, bringing in Brazilian striker Jô on loan from Manchester City FC until the end of the season.
Sizeable void
Czech international Baroš has not played since breaking his foot against Fenerbahçe SK on 25 October and last week underwent a second operation, delaying any comeback by a further four weeks. Former PFC CSKA Moskva man Jô will be asked to fill the sizeable void – Baroš had scored five goals in ten league appearances prior to being sidelined – as he seeks to rekindle the form that earned him ten Brazil caps. The 22-year-old has spent the last 12 months at Everton, and though largely a substitute this season, he featured five times for the Toffees in the UEFA Europa League group stage so will not be eligible to play for Galatasaray in the competition. Jô follows in the footsteps of Lucas Neill, who swapped Everton for Frank Rijkaard's team earlier this month.
Dos Santos adds to Galatasaray options
Galatasaray AŞ have continued their January recruitment drive by signing Mexico striker Giovani Dos Santos on loan from Tottenham Hotspur FC until the end of the season with the option of making the deal permanent.
Reunited
Dos Santos joins Lucas Neill and Jô in moving from the Premier League this month to Istanbul, where he will hope to feature more prominently than he did in the first half of the campaign. The 20-year-old made only three appearances – two in the League Cup – and spent the latter part of last term on loan at second-tier Ipswich Town FC. Capped 22 times by Mexico, Dos Santos burst onto the scene at FC Barcelona in 2007/08 when Cimbom coach Frank Rijkaard was in charge at Camp Nou. He told Mexican radio: "I'm very happy because I'll work with a coach I know very well. Joining Galatasaray is an opportunity for me because I need to play regularly in order to recover my rhythm and form." Galatasaray play Club Atlético de Madrid in the UEFA Europa League round of 32, with the first leg at the Vicente Calderón on 18 February.

Hiddink accepts Turkey challenge

Guus Hiddink will lead Turkey through their UEFA EURO 2012 qualification campaign after agreeing to become the country's head coach after his tenure with Russia finishes this summer.
Guus Hiddink has been appointed Turkey coach on a two-year contract until August 2012 with the option of a further two years. He will take up the post on 1 August after his contract with Russia expires on 30 June.
The 63-year-old announced on Saturday that he would be stepping down from the Russia helm and the Turkish Football Association has been quick to seal his signature. Turkey have been without a coach since Fatih Terim stepped down in October following their failure to qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Hiddink has worked in Turkey before having coached Fenerbahçe SK during the 1990/91 season and his former player, and ex-national team captain, Oğuz Çetin, will work alongside him as assistant coach.
Hiddink enjoyed tremendous initial success with Russia after taking charge in July 2006, leading them to the semi-finals of UEFA EURO 2008. It was Russia's best achievement since reaching the final of the 1988 UEFA European Championship, but they were unable to build on that in qualifying for this year's World Cup where they bowed out to Slovenia in the play-offs.
Hiddink made his name as a coach with PSV Eindhoven, leading the Dutch side to the European Champion Clubs' Cup title in 1988, and has also enjoyed a big impact in international football. He took the Netherlands to the semi-finals of the 1998 World Cup and repeated the feat with South Korea in 2002. Hiddink also led Australia to the last 16 at the last World Cup before taking charge of Russia.
Turkey have been drawn in a demanding Group A in qualifying for UEFA EURO 2012 alongside 2008 runners-up Germany, Austria, Belgium, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan.
